6 Days Marangu Route

Overview

A 6 days Marangu Route climb/trek on Mount Kilimanjaro allows for a more gradual ascent and better acclimatization, increasing your chances of reaching the summit successfully. as it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. It is the oldest and the most well-established route on the Kilimanjaro. This is the only route that offers sleeping huts in dormitory style. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. 6 days Marangu Route Climbing Kilimanjaro Trekking & Hikes is, unfortunately, less scenic than the other routes because the ascent and descent are along the same path. It is also the most crowded route for that reason.

ITINERARY

Day 1: MOSHI - MARANGU GATE - MANDARA HUT
You’ll be picked up from your Moshi accommodations and make the drive to Kilimanjaro National Park. Here, you’ll liaise with your guides and begin your ascent through the verdant rainforest that clothes the lower reaches of Kilimanjaro. Hiking for 5-6 hours through this ancient jungle, you’ll get to go on a miniature safari as you spot wildlife such as black and white colobus monkeys along the way. You’ll spend your night at the modern Mandara Huts, which boast luxuries such as solar lighting and flush toilets. You won’t be seeing those again anytime soon!

You’ll set off bright and early today, as you’ve got a long day of hiking ahead of you! Today’s hike takes you from the verdant rainforest into the stark alpine zone, as you’ll cover more than 11 kilometres on your way to the Maundi Crater. If the weather is clear, you’ll find stunning views of Kibo Glacier from here before settling down for the evening.

Today is a day for acclimatisation, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be idle! You’ll make your way to Mawenzi Hut today, passing the Zebra Rocks along the way. This is a day for slow walking and hydrating, so take your time and enjoy the experience of being on the mountain! Of course, if you aren’t interested in the day hike, you can instead stay at camp and catch up on your rest for the hard days ahead.

It’s another big day of hiking as you make your way to Kibo Hut to set up camp ahead of your summit attempt. Climbing nearly 1,000 meters, you’ll pass your final watering point at 4,130 meters before arriving at Kibo Hut in the afternoon. Be sure to drink plenty of water during your early dinner, as you’ll be up bright and early tomorrow to begin your ascent to the summit!

You’ll start your day early today — just after midnight! Your climbing team will wake you with a cup of hot tea and a light snack to fuel your energy as you dress and prepare your daypack for the adventure ahead. You’ll be hiking through complete darkness for the next 5 to 7 hours, so pace yourself carefully. You’ll reach Stella Point a few hours before dawn, where the sky will begin to lighten. From there, it’s another two hours of intense hiking to reach your ultimate goal: Uhuru Peak.

At 5,895 meters (19,340 feet), you’ll witness a breathtaking sunrise and take in panoramic views that few get to experience. You’ve made it! After celebrating your summit, you’ll begin the descent back to Horombo Hut via Kibo Hut.

With a total hiking time between 12 and 16 hours, this will surely be one of the longest and most challenging days of your life — but also one of the most rewarding.

Today is a day of celebration! After enjoying one last hearty breakfast on the mountain, you’ll begin your descent to Marangu Gate. Although it’s nearly 20 kilometers, the steady downhill makes the trek much easier than the ascent.

When you arrive at the gate, you’ll have the chance to thank your porters and guides for their incredible support and effort—this is also the perfect moment to give them their well-deserved tips. You’ll then receive your certificate of completion, a proud memento of your achievement.

Finally, your driver will be waiting to whisk you away to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where you can relax and reflect on your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
